An Immersive Audio Soundscape journey through J.R.R Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. You can also use it as an accompaniment for reading the books or sync it with the official audiobook to get an incredible immersive audio experience.

The Project

I have created an audio soundscape to accompany you while you read J.R.R Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings". This is something that has never been done before. It is on a scale far above any of our wildest Tolkien fan dreams. I have CHAPTER SPECIFIC audio. All designed and timed to match the official audiobook.

  • I have written an entire score. Each piece runs alongside the length of an entire chapter of the book.

  • I used advanced 3D immersive audio equipment to record the natural world. These recordings are inserted into the Soundscape to make you feel like you are walking alongside the Fellowship.

  • I have designed and mixed sound FX for creatures like the Balrog, Ringwraiths, and many more to appear along your journey through the story.

All of these layers are presented separately and together to have a multitude of listening experiences for your adventures in this world. They are composed and mixed with the idea that you can enjoy the story in pure audio form. You can also listen as you read and they can be used for relaxing, D&D nights, immersing yourself into other fantasy worlds, and more!

You’ll have access to multiple versions of the mix:

- Score Only

- Ambience Only

- Score and Ambience

- Score, Ambience, and Sound FX

This totals 12 different complete sets of files with over 200+ HOURS of audio! All available directly through a podcast app of your choice. You can even join our growing Discord community to quickly learn how to sync your copy of the Soundscape with your copy of Andy Serkis’ official audiobook!

The Score

I've spent years analyzing Howard Shore's score for the Peter Jackson films as well as many other composers' techniques. I followed in Shore's footsteps to craft themes for the characters and places of Middle-earth. The themes grow, intertwine, and build. I have brought in other musicians and composers to contribute and build this body of work. In total, I composed more than 50 hours of Music, created with the hope of inspiring and immersing oneself into this world.

The Ambience

The natural world was so important to these works and their creator. I went out to forests, rivers, and caves to bring that world to your listening experience. I have used 3D microphones to create recordings that envelop and arc all around you through your headphones, creating what it would feel like to be in the Mines of Moria, the Forest of Fangorn, and more!

The Sound FX

Monsters, creatures, and so much more. I designed them and brought them to life in new and exciting ways. Using the technology and experience I have with sound design, I have built a believable world of sound FX and movement to go along with the music and ambience.

The Research

So much time and care went into the creation, language, and detail of these stories. The only way to do this project justice is to give it that same level of dedication. I worked with a team of research assistants to find every sound, every ambience, and every possible Music cue I could find. We laid out everything from how far away a river is to whether a fell beast flies to the North or South, and so much more. This has taken time and care to be sure this project lives up to the body of work it hopes to accompany.

"Recording over six hours for an audiobook, for someone who does not really care for his own voice, is a truly daunting task. I would never have managed it without the help of Jordan Rannells, who patiently coached me in every detail, from the acquisition of a decent microphone, helping organize the texts, and how to relax and tackle such a challenge. Equally, Jordan took my halting, often-recommenced, and interrupted recordings and patiently pieced them together into a seamless whole. The result is better than I could have ever hoped for. Thank you, Jordan."
